1960 Johnson 10 hp still won't start

Ok, so it was sittin. I rebuilt the carb, changed the coils, cleaned the points, new spark plugs, new impeller, new lower unit lube. I have bright blue spark from both plugs, but it still won't start. Any clues?

Will it fire if you spray premixed fuel directly into the carb?

Just went through the same thing myself. I know what you are going through.

When you rebuilt the carb did you adjust the float. That was my problem. The float has to sit parallel to the top body of the carb.

It's not the same carb but very close.

when you put the carb back together see if you can blow through the fuel intake. then turn it upside down when the float would be shut and do the same test.

Ok, did the "blow" test, and I can't blow through the fuel intake no matter which way it's sitting. why would this be?

ok, just took it apart, and it seems somehow I lost the needle spring for the float valve assembly. Can I get just the spring or do I have to buy another carb rebuild kit? What is the purpose of that spring?

The "spring" attaches to the float arm and pulls the needle down when the float goes down. Without the spring, the needle can stick, especially if it is the rubber-tipped kind. With some fine wire, you could probably fashion your own. It's not very high-tech. Just something to move the needle with the float.

that would def affect your blow test,,,,,with the float working the valve up and down properly you should get air into the bowl with the carb turned right side up,,,,,turn the carb upside down,valve should close and no air should make it into the bowl

But a box of small springs and you can probably bend one to work. I doubt you can buy just the one soring. Yes, if the needle sticks that will affect the blow test and no fuel will flow and no cylinders will fire and no engine will run!

Ok, I will begin my search for a spring that works. I will post back here if my motor does not run even after finding a suitable spring. thanks guys.
