1960 johnson 40 not pumping water

OK so with some help from you guys I got this motor runing and it seems to run pretty good but I dont know for sure because it isnt pumping any water so I dont want to let it run for long. When I first got it running It wouldnt pump water so I pulled the t-stat and cranked it with the housing off and watched the water fly. I put the cover back on and it was pumping water intermitently without a t-stat in it. So then I ended up with another boat and havnt messed with it for a wile now but today I put in a new impeller (wich it definitley needed) and it dosnt want to pump water at all no matter what I try. I would love to get this motor out on the water this weakend and see how well it realy runs so I am open to any suggestions.

You may need to check and see if the impeller housing tube connected with the water tube.Also check for blockage.Spray some water under pressure thu the water tube and see if there is any trash.

Also check the impeller key.

You running it in a barrel with the water up high enough on the leg, these motors need to be in a barrel with lots o water or they won't pump.

the water tubes are definitley conected and I can blow through the ports were the t-stat sits and on the smaller one I can feal the air come out were the water is suposed to and the other one makes good bubbles in the barrel. The water in the barrel is the same as it was when it blew water before but I have heard about the water level being a problem with this motor so I have the water up to the cavitation plate. Should it need more than that?

OK thanks alot for the quick help I will have to wait until tomorrow to keep happy neighbors but I sure hope thats it. Also if I didnt put the impellor in with the blades curved the right way would that problem fix itself. Im sure I put it in right but i would sure like to rule that out.

The impeller vanes should flip once started, being new and pliable. Try adding water and go from there.

Fantastic I finaly got back to it and it works great. Im going to take it out tomorrow and see how she does. The motor is replacing my honda 15 hp on a 14 ft trihull and I just cant wait to see how fast it can run. Im a little nervous about running such an old motor but ive heard good things about these johnsons. Other than the basic tools is there anything I shold bring with me for this motors first time out?

If it's in good condition, they are one of the best 40HP ever made! I have a similiar outboard, Evinrude 40HP '66 and it runs so good, to bad the season is pretty over.

Its not pretty but it runs pretty good in the barrel, it idles good and dosnt seem to have any problem winding up so I gess we wil see tommorrow. I cant wait....

Other than the basic tools is there anything I shold bring with me for this motors first time out?

A paddle or two wouldn't hurt

I always have paddles in any boat i go in but that reminds me I will bring my trolling motor even if it is underpowered.
