1960 Mercury 400 No Spark

I have been able to turn the motor over and checked compression, 120 - 130 psi on all cylinders, but have no spark at the plug end of the plug wires. Could I be missing something simple like a neutral safety switch? Any advice on where to start the trouble shooting process?

I do not believe there is a nuetral safety switch on the spark system.----------Fact,------It is very easy to split the magneto and remove the lower assembly.----Clean and set the breaker points at 0.008 / 0.010".-------This is a procedure that you MUST learn to do.-------Test for spark before installing the lower part again.-----------Don,t know how , then ask before using a hammer.

Racerone, Thank you. I'll check the manual on the neutral safety switch issue and confirm I am not fighting that. Seems odd it would start in gear as it's not a "dock buster". Possible they do though. I agree splitting magneto is next step. Might find all manner of abnormalities in there. I'll be working on it later today and will post what I find.

There is no need to check for a safety switch on the spark system unless a previous owner installed one !

In the electrical diagram titled "Electric Starter Wiring Diagram 4-Cyl. Single Lever Remote Control" There is a mercury safety switch shown connected to the magneto. I assume this cuts power to the magneto when the boat is upside down with the motor on the transom? There goes my air boat idea.

You can eliminate all outside interference with the magneto (safety switch, ignition switch, etc.) by removing the wire from the post on the side of the magneto.

As noted above, you can remove the mag as a unit. Be gentle with the bakelite bits as they are easily cracked and VERY pricey if you need to replace them. Clean up the coil contacts, rotor and cap. Clean and dress the points, gapped as above. Test for spark at the coil with the caps removed. Ground the mag body against a bench vice, anvil, trailer hitch, etc. and hold the coil tang about 1/2" away from the steel bit you're grounding against. Spin the mag over (clockwise) and see what you've got. Should jump that gap easily.
