Hello everyone! I am new to these forums and I have a good, but possibly overused, question about my outboard. I have a 1960 Johnson Seahorse 5.5 hp motor model CD-17 and I need to change the lower unit lube as I don't know when the last time it has been changed.
I acquired this motor just a few months ago and haven't been on the water with it yet because I want to give it servicing before using it.
I obtained an OEM service manual from a person at another forum and it shows this and other motors and all the info I may need for service except, the recommended lower unit lube is no longer manufactured.
Can I use a modern lube in the lower unit and if so, which would be best? Also, I'll be wanting to get some parts for this motor, specifically a water pump impeller. It may be OEM and may need replacing in the very near future. Where could I find an impeller?
I'm pushing a 12' fiberglass semi-V jon style boat and won't be trying to break or make any speed records, just using it for fishing.
Thank you for any assistance any of you can give me.

Thank you Middleground! I'll take your advice and info to heart. I want this motor to be in its best shape before I get it wet!

An impeller for the 5.5 is the same one used from 1954 to 1974, part number 379764 for $11.05. The complete water pump kit with housing, plate, gaskets, screws, impeller, etc. is about $36 under part number 391391. These are available at any Johnson/Evinrude dealer.

For the gearcase, originally they used hypoid 90 (called type B back then) on that model but now they recommend the HiVis or better yet, the UltraHPf lube, also available at your local dealer.
