1960 Sport twin gear slippage?

I have a 1960 Evinrude sport twin model 10020. The lower unit seems to slip a tooth about every ten seconds. I had a recent repair to the cavitation plate and the welder did separate the lower unit an inch he says. Trouble is that no one really wants to work on such an old motor. I am mechanically inclined and wonder wether I should do the repair myself. Are the repiar parts, gears, gaskets, etc readily available? Please help me with the diagnosis.

The best source that I have found for parts on the vintage motors is sea-way.com in Seattle, Washington.

Having said that, are you absolutely sure that your problem is not the propeller?

The welder that repaired the cavitation plate is a prop repair specialist and he did overhaul the prop. It seems to be a good repair.

Slip a tooth about every ten seconds, huh? Most people describe it as "it feels like I hit a log every ten seconds". Or "hit a stump, rock, gator", or whatever. It's all the same problem: Your clutch dog and forward gear are worn out.

Thank you. I thought as much, clutch dogs and such, and yes hitting a log would sound correct too, lol. I did not have this the last time it was in the water, only after the lower unit was separated for the welding. I have rebuilt car motors and I believe I can do these repairs unless you tell me it would be unwise. I would have to find someone to press the bearings though. Again, thanks for the information.

No bearings to press. People a lot less mechanically inclined than you are digging into their gearcases every day.

The work is easy, the soft parts are easy to get (seals etc), but the gears/dog are the hard part to find if you need em.
