Restoring an old 18ft starcraft Bahama, Got the engine running ,but I 'am having trouble with starting and shutting down! found a couple broke wires in the entrance harness ! Can anybody help with the troubleshooting , right now i'am trying to figure out how to shut it down! Does the switch ground run all the way back to the motor like the mag wire ? HELP

If the motor is a magneto, the ign switch will be the place the spark is grounded.

However, some of those early V4 motors had battery ignition. The magneto distributor caps had the plug wires exit out the bottom. Battery ign distributor caps had the plug wires exit out the side of the cap. Obviously, the spark on a battery ign was killed when the power to the coil was interrupted.

1960 was magneto ignition. Grounding the stud on the side of the magneto housing is what shuts it down. Of course that is done via a wire going to the key switch and a ground wire going back. You must use an ignition switch suitable for magneto ignition. DO NOT use a switch that sends a battery voltage back to the mag unless you want to buy a coil.

It does have a magneto, but does anyone know if the ground connection from the ign sw runs all the way back to the motor block or just into the junction box ?

I knew the answer, but had to scratch my head for a minute to think of the "why" of it. It goes all the way back to the powerhead in order to make the junction box and cables compatible with the twin cylinder motors. (The twins use two wires to the mag). As for the V4 it really isn't a requirement because the junction box is grounded to the motor via the battery cable, so a kill wire ground that ends at the j-box would work.

Thanks FR I cant get it to shut off with a functioning key sw so I must have an open ground ! I need to trace it back to the junction box I guess and try to find the open. I have a solid link to the mag but it will not ground with the sw turning off !! THX I'll let you know what I find
