1960's 10hp evinrude question

just picked this motor up and it starts on first pull but because it's not in water yet i only run it for a few seconds then kill it,it then begins to leak loose oily substance out of a small hole on front side of shaft just above prop area?<br />also i dont know what the high and low speed controls are?

Hello, Lewcap.<br /><br />You should get a manual. If you don't use correct operating procedures you may destroy your engine.<br /><br />For example, you have probably ruined your water pump impeller by running the engine out of the water.<br /><br />The exact year of manufacture is important. Before 1964 you should use a 24:1 or 32:1 fuel mix. Later engines, after 1964, should use a 50:1 mix.<br /><br />Let us know the model number from the little plate on the mount. Then we can confirm what year you have. :)
