hello, I received 1961 15hp viking 15d12v (same as the Gale from what I've read) from my Dad. About 10 years ago he got it from my Grandpa. According to my Dad my Grandpa only used it maybe a dozen times before it got put in a shed for who knows how long. When my Dad got it, he got it running but it wouldn't run very well it would die when you throttled it up. So it ended up get put back in a shed until some one had time to try to fix it. Anyway I have it now and would like to get it going. The Engine is very clean inside. I took the carb off and it was clean. However fuel pump diaphragms seem dry to me so i'm guessing this was the problem 10 years ago and still is today. That water pump looks OK but the impeller has 1 broken off fin. OK so basically why I decided to post was I am not sure where to find these parts I read evinrude and Johnson have compatible part but I'm just not sure which ones are. I also want to see if people that know more then me about these things think it's worth trying to get it going. Also is there more parts I should replace now? sorry this is long winded.

Parts I know I need.
-Fuel pump diaphragm
-Impeller
-Spark plugs.

Thanks for advise.

Fuel pump and fuel pump parts are obsolete. Just slap on a new 18-7351 fuel pump from here at iboats. You will have to change the hoses, but you were going to do that anyway---weren't you?

Impeller is 18-3002 also from here at iboats. The old one does not "look good" if it has a blade broken off.

That motor is kind of a mixture of several J/E models. Do yourself a favor and get a parts book specific to your Gale. If you know what you are looking for, iboats has some parts, Evinrude dealers can help with others--but you have to go in with part numbers in hand or they won't give you the time of day.

EDIT: No need to buy a parts book, it is on-line. Eaton's Viking Outboard Motor Site

Thanks.
Ya I guess the impeller doesn't look good just meant the rubber is still pliable. I really don't know that much about this stuff so I'm kind of learning as I go. The fuel lines still seemed flexible and didn't feel dried out so I didn't know if changing that was needed. I read on a different post that I should change the float in the carb is that important too? I have read a few things about fuel tanks but I'm still not sure what to do with the one I have. Looks like I has some rust in the bottom should I replace it? I seen a few guys talk about putting rocks in with a cleaning agent however the tanks has a lip on inside of the cap hoe and its really hard even getting old fuel out.

Thanks again.

1. I guess what you says a lot about impellers being OK just because they are pliable. Proves that doesn't mean much, doesn't it?

2. You should change fuel lines in order to get Ethanol-resistant ones. Same thing goes for the float. Then avoid getting all hung up on the Ethanol war issue.

3. Well let's just say that the rust will cause problems in the fuel system if it comes loose and floats around in the gas. That lip inside the filler can be removed after you remove the fuel outlet assembly. But they still are a bugger to get clean. You might want to consider just getting another tank. They are not hard to find.
