my name is Jacob and I am new to iboat forums, I just got my grandpas 1961 alumcraft registered and brought home from my parents house where it say for the last twelve years As a yard ornimant. Not sure on model number or year , just going by what I was told.
I was going to paint it two tone like a chris craft, but decided to sand down all the corrosion and buff it to a mirror shine like truckers do with their fuel tanks. However , I spent 2 hours sanding and polishing half of the front aluminum cover and although that little 2' spot came a long way, it's a long way from a mirror shine. Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks .

Re: 1961 aluma craft

Post a few pictures so we can see what you are working with. You have to be careful with sanding if you are going to polish it. Sanding will leave scratches that will have to be worked back out before you will get that mirror shine you are looking for. Depending on how well the paint is stuck, you might be surprised at what a pressure washer would do. I wasn't so lucky, the paint on mine was as crappy looking as they come, but stuck like it was perma bonded LOL :) so a high quality stripper is what I had to use. I'm planning on repainting mine, so sanding at the point I am now will be okay, but only lightly and not on the rivets. I plan on polishing part of it so no sand paper at all in that area. Good luck and welcome aboard!
