Where can I get parts for magneto? What goes bad inside? I lost spark at hi rpm last weekend. Pulled mag apart and would guess the coil is bad.
Points are good, and I tried a different condenser.

Hi, Peter.

First, get a manual. Don't replace parts on a guess. Find out what needs replacing and replace only that or those parts.

You can get good aftermarket manuals here: http://www.boatmotors.com/manuals.html

And you can get parts at www.twincityoutboard.com.

Good luck. :)

Thanks Jb,
I have origanal manual from 1961 covering this, and many other evenrude outboards. Not a lot of info on insides of magneto.

Peter.... If you lost spark suddenly, such as shutting the key off, I would strongly suspect that the rotor shorted out to the shaft on which it sits. If so, the cure would be to replace the rotor. OMC part number 580260.

DO NOT attempt to use the automotive type rotor which is OMC part number 580338.

The magnetor rotor has a wide flared end to the metal tip whereas the automotive type has a small straight even tip. The two will interchange physically but not in functionaries.

Thanks Joe,
I think your right. I gave the rotor a closer
look and saw a dimple on the shaft side. Couldn't
find the part today, but will be on it monday. I cleaned some rust from that area on shaft. Can I
use some kind of isolator grease under the new rotor to avoid corrosion? P.S. Love that old
engine, and the looks I get around the lakes.

Joe's idea is good, but be sure also to check the condition of the carbon "button" on the distributor cap that makes contact with the rotor. On a motor that old it could be broken off or worn away. It is attached to a small spring and fitted inside the cap.

Re: 1961 evenrude 75 hp starflight magneto

There is a simple way to check if you do or don't have spark (with the dist. cap off) . Remove the cap (and rotor) and place a screwdriver across the dist housing (a ground) just up to but not touching the coil secondary "flat spot, button", you can now crank the motor OR if you have removed the dist, (like I like to do so that you're not doing it upside down) and check for spark. If you have removed the whole thing, you'll find that you can briskly rotate the "wheel" by hand to generate the spark!! You've removed the cap, rotor and wires from the equation. If you still don't have spark, it's the coil, rotor, points, condensor, wiring or key switch! There is a fairly weird method of adjusting the points and belt timing in order to get this thing running correctly later but that's another post!!!

Thanks everyone,
Joe hit the nail on the head the first time, the rotor was shorted. I've never seen a rotor
get smoked before, but these must get overlooked in the tune-ups. Joe is the "Guru".
The Bobber is back!
