Greetings to All,
I was just given a 1961 Evinrude 18HP Fastwin. It's seems in pretty good condition. But is missing the recoil starter assembly. I was told it ran good last time it was used several years ago, it's only quirk was that sometimes after it had been run for awhile it would die and not restart. I'm looking for input on weather you guys think it might be worth restoring? and any other info on this motor you might have like was it problematic or considered a good motor in its day? its serial # is 15035-02351

thanks for your input in advance. Chris

Re: 1961 Evinrude 18HP Fastwin Info. Please

they are great motors. running a while and stopping could lead to several things: 1/ coils getting hot and failing 2/ carb float stuck, and it's just burn the gas in the carb and stopping. before spending any money on it. do a compression check, i had a link to a great outboard grave yard(can't find), but you could try tcmarine.com for the recoil, or ebay. for general maint. parts he's a good place

Thank you for your input, I plan to do a compression check. I also know from the markings on the powerhead that it has been replaced at one time, but I don't know what yaer it was done. Again Thanks.

Re: 1961 Evinrude 18HP Fastwin Info. Please

I have a 1967 Fastwin. Great to work on and parts are available.

This past year I changed the impellar, coils, points, condensors, plugs, de-carbed the engine and brought the compression back to a balanced situation and rebuilt the carb.

There are multiple years that the parts interchange from.

GET A MANUAL!

I guess I would start by a good cleaning of everything. The points tend to get coated with surface gunk but are cheap to replace.

I would spray seafoam (flood the cylinders) into the cylinders and let it set 24 hours or more.

There is a cork float in the carb along with some tiny passages...... take it apart and clean it all.

Great outboards. Questions? Just ask! Have fun

We had a 61 18 Evinrude for years. We ran it on a big 15 ft X 6 ft wide Chris Craft kit boat with full runabout style decks and tiller steering.I was about 140# then and sat on the rear deck next to the motor.Under ideal conditions it approached its maximum rated speed of 27 mph.I once got it to plane with 5 adults aboard it took some doing but it did it that one time.

The 18hp Evinrude/Johnson 18s are probably as close to outboard perfection as you will ever find. Lightweight, reliable, powerful and easy to work on. Throw in the fact that parts availability for a nearly 50 year old motor is still very good and you have a motor that with some basic TLC should last another 50 years!

As was said, get a manual for it before doing anything. Recoils turn up on eBay all the time, but don't forget to check your local marinas. Sometimes if you can get by the clean-cut, fast-talking salesman at the front counter and speak with the grease-under-his-fingernails mech in back, you can find all sorts of goodies. A box of donuts before 10 o'clock coffee goes a long way to getting in the good graces of those that know where the "old" stuff is...

Thanks for the input everybody. I did a compression check, both cylinders tested at about 100 psi. This was done pulling it by hand no electric start on this motor. Looking into the cylinders through the spark plud hole it looks like this motor needs to be de-carbed, a lot of build up inside on the pistons I could see. Time for some SeaFoam!

All in all I think this motor is in good enough condition to restore. What do you think?

Ummm - four year old thread.... and no, you don't want to use 30wt. in your outboard. Use newer TCW3 rated oil mixed at the original ratio...
