1961? Johnson 40 hp

Im getting a big current draw with the key in the on position, only when you hook up the connector that goes to the engine. Hooked up the points, but didnt take it apart and not sure about the wiring. runs fine with the key off, no charge to speak of, do these have a charge coil? Im an auto, cycle mechanic and this is my first outboard to work on.Is there somebody with a diagram? Thanks!

Sure thing:<br />Click here.<br /> <br />Sounds like you've either got the choke activating, or your getting +12v into the igntion system. It's critical to understand that the +12v system is in no way connected to the ignition system. Therefore, you must use the proper outboard keyswitch.
