Hi,

I have a new to me Johnson 40hp that I bought not running. I was told it had a bad upper seal, but I find the 'ring' at the top of the engine halves is broken. The ignition plate rotates around this. The two halves (one on each half of the crank case) surround the crank shaft just under the flywheel. What is this for? Can I replace the seal/bearing and run it as is?

I'll see if I can post a picture later

Yea, we'll need a pic of what exactly the "ring" is. There is a ring that secures the mag plate to the block and if that is broke, then just replace it. But if part of the engine block is broke, then you'll either have to replace the block, or have a good aluminum tig welder repair it for you.

Here's some pictures... in the one you can see the 'ring' peices left behind. In the next you can see everything off the top of the engine. It isn't the Mag plate pieces. :(

Any idea what that 'ring' does? It wouldn't be strong enough for the bearing... is it just for the seal?

The "ring" or neck on the crankcase is the part about which the mag plate rotates. It is necessary to keep the mag plate centered, which affects breaker point gap and coils-to-magnets clearance.

I can guess the previous owner tried to pry the seal out and broke the ring.

In short----cylinder and crankcase assembly is junk. No other way to say it.

Yea... I was affraid of that. I might see about having it welded some day (friends that are aircraft welders).

BTW... will a 1960 Evinrude powerhead match up (bolt on). Can I just swap the Johnson electric start. Or do I have to swap ignition and carb?
