1961 Johnson seahorse 40hp lower end question

Was out on the water Saturday and was at top speed (which is not very fast) and all of a sudden the engine raced and the prop. stopped. I found that anything faster than a fast idle the prop. slipped. Got back to the ramp to find grey oil leaking from a hoel that I assume my lower end fill plug fell out from. My question is, does this sound like I messed up some of the gears or do I just need to flush the old oil/water and replace the oil and plug?

Is that hole 1/4" diameter or 3/8" diameter? If 1/4" it is for a shifer pivot pin and the inside parts fell out of position when it came out. Oil drain and fill plugs are 3/8" diameter.

Is the prop hub spun, or the drive pin broken? If the fill plug came out it may have slipped into neutral on the water. Drain/refill the lower, put the plug in tight with a new washer and take it to the boat ramp for a test...back it down into the water and go through the gears. Hopefully it's not making any nasty noises right?

I just had a spun hub problem. Dry test for spun hub with pin is take hub off and put pin in the groove and take some need nose pliers and grab the pin and try and move it. If it moves, spun hub.

It is 1/4" only on one side (there is nothing on the other side) Is there only one fill/drain plug? I also notice the prop shaft has more space now. When I drop the lower end what can I expect? Do I simply realign the shifter pin and replace the bolt?

if you are lucky. you may have to open the lower unit to get it aligned.

The drain plug is on the bottom of the nose section, just forward of the skeg. You have to hunker down and look upward to see it.

It takes 150-180 Ft/Lbs of torque to make the hub spin if it is good. No way you can apply that much torque with your foot, pliers, or whatever. If it slips at less than 150 Ft/lbs, it is shot.
