This is my second outboard ive owned when i bought it it ran fine it sit for few months and now smoke like crazy the thermostat is gunked up bout to order new one could there be any other issuses causing exessive smoke

Well, the important issue here is the heat. If it is overheating, it can quickly destroy itself. You need to address that. Smoke?? It is supposed to smoke. But many things can cause Excessive smoke, such as running too rich, too much oil, previous fogging for storage, carbon blasting treatments, running in a barrel, etc, etc.

How can you tell the lower unit is getting hot? Are you not running it in a barrel or on the lake?

If this is a NEW smoking issue, could you have bumped the carb adjustments, making it over rich?

It is smoke right, and not steam!? If steam, could be a bad head gasket, exhaust gasket, letting water into the cylinder. Do a compression test.

Is it pumping water?

Im new to working on obs but pretty good at mechanics im cleaning the carbon off pistons and gunk off head casing now working my way to lower unit while thermostat is getting ordered im running 50:1 oil mix im running in barrel and felt lower unit it was spitting hot water out of exhaust didnt really seem water in cylinder gotta check lower unit seal believe water getting in there from prop seal head gasket looks fine

Get more oil in that mix!! 1959 needs more than 50:1. It'll smoke more, but last longer.

It calls for 24:1 but that to much oil for me ive seen 40:1 50:1 seen ppl run bunch different amounts thats what im tryin to figure out is the smoking it didnt smoke hardly at all when bought and that was during winter

Just more proof that folks do not understand the concept of 2 stroke lubrication !
