I was wondering if anyone could help me with a few things. I just bought a 15 ft 1970 Glasspar open bow tri hull with a 1961 'rude lark 3 40 hp motor model number 35525. Does anyone have the boats specs? Load capacity, etc. Engine is in great shape except for the lower gears are shot, I bought it this way, and am now having a hard time finding the parts. Does anyone out there know if there are other manufacturers that are compatible, or where to get the whole case new or used, and approx. how much this is all going to run me.

Re: 1961 Rude Lark 3 lower case help

Your best bet is going to be either an outboard junkyard, like tcoutboards.com, or eBay. I see lower units for your outboard from time to time on eBay.

The junkyards, however, are a better bet, since they will have some idea of how good the lower unit is.

New parts, except for the seals, are going to be a bit difficult to find, unless you can find some new old stock parts at some old-time Evinrude dealer. They haven't been available for quite a while.

Go to tcoutboard.com (add a www.) and email them with a query for the parts. Your motor and the Johnson 40 are identical. Give them the model number and they'll be able to tell you if they have a good lower unit in stock for you.

Price? I don't know. I haven't bought one, but they aren't cheap. Still, you have an excellent outboard there, when it's running right. Several folks here have the same outboard or the earlier 35hp models.

We'll always be happy to help answer questions.

There's a lower unit for this era big twin on eBay right now. Do a search for "(johnson, evinrude) 40" (no quotes), and it will turn up.

The lower unit there is the manual shift, not the electric/hydraulic shift, and is for a 1960. I believe that will fit. If yours is an electric shift unit, it won't.

These lower units seem to show up about once a week on ebay. The search I gave you will always turn them up.
