Holy Cow!!! I am soo excited about the 1961 Lone Star powered by Sea King I just purchased. I haven't gotten in running yet but looking forward to getting her going. I am a female and trying to learn as much as I can and I have a few questions.
It's a 35hp and I was told it ran last year.

1. Does it have a magneto or do I NEED the 12v battery for anything other than starting?

2. Do you have to be a Gorilla to use the pull start option? It seems to have a lot of compression. I have lubed the cylinders and turned over without the plugs..

3. Does it have compression release? Because I don't see such a feature here. I may be blind!!

4. I look forward to finding parts, service, even operating manuals for my project....but where?

5. Are you guys out there running these wonderful antiques or just redoing them for the satisfaction of accomplishment?

Thank you in advance and I WILL get her running!!! Looking forward to it, and yes I do have quite a few neighbors willing to help me, but I'm still trying to learn as much as I can!!

Battery not necessary - just for starting

2. Do you have to be a Gorilla to use the pull start option? It seems to have a lot of compression. I have lubed the cylinders and turned over without the plugs..
They are a bear to pull-start. Does it have electric start?

3. Does it have compression release? Because I don't see such a feature here. I may be blind!!
Should have if it's a 35hp from the 50's - look for spring valves on each cylinder and an activation rod which runs up to the pull-starter.

4. I look forward to finding parts, service, even operating manuals for my project....but where?
Many parts available right here on Iboats, or Ebay

5. Are you guys out there running these wonderful antiques or just redoing them for the satisfaction of accomplishment?
My 1957 Lark 35hp gets run practically everyday in the summer. With a little care and maintenance, they are very reliable motors.

Thank you in advance and I WILL get her running!!! Looking forward to it, and yes I do have quite a few neighbors willing to help me, but I'm still trying to learn as much as I can!!

B]Hope this helps - good luck with it![[/B]

Yes, it has electric start but the ignition wire does not seem to be getting any juice from the battery. Could there be a problem with the relay? Wiring is original and was thinking about rewiring everything. Any advice on this?

I am going to move this to the Other Outboards forum, flyking.

Your Sea King is neither Johnson nor Evinrude, it is a Gale. Though similar to JohnnyRudes, it is not the same in all ways as 1961 Johnson or Evinrude 35s.

Good luck. :)

Do yourself a favor and get a parts book specific to your motor. Then, armed with part numbers, you can go to any Evinrude dealer and buy many of the parts. But try iboats first.

EDIT: You have a PM.

Re: 1961 sea king

Sorry if I confused you. Yes, Gale was a division of OMC and most parts were also used on Johhnys and 'Rudes, but often not always in the same year. That is why it is important that you have the Service Manual and parts book specific to your '61 Sea King 35HP.

Good luck.
