Hi there all. I have a 1961 Johnson 75 HP, v4AL-13, owner for the last 3 years. Last year, I replaced the impeller, and it ran good all summer. Upon start-up this spring, the engine is overheating while running in the drum. I pulled the thermostat and placed into pan of boiling water and it does move. However, it seems to easily push back down by spring pressure alone, so I suspect it is bad. I have searched all over for a new one, but nobody seems to have a listing. Any ideas where to order? I don't see many parts left for these V-4 engines, at least nothing listed. Would it be a better idea to call some of these companies to see if they have parts? I tried Laings, Ishopmarine, Iboats. No luck.

The OMC/Bombardier part number of that item (it's called a vernatherm) is 377276, and it should still be available at your local dealership.

Re: 1961 thermostat problem

Just an update on the part- I was able to order it using the part number you supplied me from ishopmarine, although it wasn't listed when I searched by year, HP, part name. Is this typical? I guess I am wondering if I should get a parts list for the motor. I do have the repair manual, and that has been invaluable for changing the gear seals and impeller, etc.
Thanks again for the part number, Joe.

Since you already have the service manual, it would be ideal to also have the parts manual.
