This motor runs great but does not pump water for cooling the engine. I've had it apart and everything seems fine. The impeller is a little stiff. Could ,this be the problem?

Here is a link to electronic parts diagram that is very close to your year model motor.

Alot of the parts from (Gale) Viking outboard cross match with parts that go to Evinrude and Johnson outboards of those years as well. Gale, Evinrude and Johnson outboards were housed under the parent company umbrella of OMC.

Here is a link to a replacement impeller. (If you can try and stick with the OMC/BPR) replacements because the impellers are correctly sized and not as stiff.

Check to make sure there is a impeller key so it may turn the impeller, sometimes it is forgotten and the impeller will surely not pump water. Also, when you are bolting the lower unit back up, watch very closely that water tube is lining up with the water pumping housing grommet. If not careful it can not slide in or be displaced when putting the lower unit back on.

Good luck
