My motor will not turn; ive been looking on this site for a few weeks now but I couldnt find anything that helps; so here I go making a thread.

My 1961 3d-17v will not turn. the flywheel will not turn. Ive tried turning it by hand and by the cord but it will not move. There is no oil and/or gas in the cylinders. Ive also got a new spark plug.
Any help would be much appreciated. I would love to get this motor running again.
Thanks in advance,
1961 viking 3hp

Howdy,

Welcome Aboard!

Well, first of all, you're in teh wrong forum. This is the OMC I/O & Inboard Forum.

You would want to post in Other Outboard Brands

Maybe a Mod will move this for you

Regards,

Rick

I have one that has been soaking for about 2 years now. I'd love to get mine going also. Looks like I need to start looking for a piston.

Good luck with yours.

If the rod isn't seized to the crank you may be able to unbolt the cylinder and rotate the crank to a point you can unbolt the rod
through the intake or in the gap between the cylinder and the crankcase.
This is strictly conjecture on my part.

These are the same as the Johnson Evinrude 3 horsepower engines, they were sold through Eatons under the Viking name, in 1964 OMC shut down the Gale division and Vikings were then produced by Chrysler. Soak it down in oil, I have a 1953 Johnson 3hp in the same state and I have taken it down to only the block and pistons and it still is seized, I have already gotten my 1939 Johnson HS-10 2.5hp unstuck with this method.

The OP maybe has it fixed by now, but just for the record, the single cylinder Gale / Viking is a totally different motor than the 3hp J/E. However, stuck is stuck and the remedies are similar.

Agreed, but for the record, in Europe the Gale 3 was based on the Johnson 3-horse twin. Being an Eatons Viking means it is a Canadian Gale 3-horse single like you said.

That is so true, not many people know that. Here's proof:
