Anyone who read my other post knows that I've bought a parts motor for a 1958 and used it to repair another, mostly complete 1958 18hp.

This might be a dumb question. However, I need to know. I bought a 1962 18 hp evinrude. It has stripped threads and an attempted repair at on of the plugs. Is a 1958 head going to effect the prefromance on my 1962 motor? If so. How? Other than the thermostat will not be in the 1958. Is it worth my time to find a 1962 head?

you know, the head basically is the motor. you will be putting the hood and midsection on a 58 head.

If you're saying you stripped the threads in one of the spark plug holes, you can have it repaired with a heli-coil very reasonably.

I agree, a stripped thread whether spark plug or head bolt can be brought back to a like new condition with the proper size and installation of a heli-coil. Have never had a problem with one of these.

Nope. Just the head. 1962 powerhead with the 1958 cylinder head on it. Same covers fit still. Just have to lose the thermostat. The 58 didn't have a thermostat the 62 does. Bolt on fine and runs. I'm thinking long term or future problems.

The previous head is cracked..(found it while cleaning for reuse.) And a bad heli- coil. Anyhow. It's useless. I will get another if it's a must. Otherwise I will run with the 58 cylinder head.

tim's outboard 218-682-2331 will likely have one for less than the cost of a heli-coil, and you'll have the thermostat housing... Not sure if the '58 head would let the engine warm properly, but it'd probably work fine.

Try these 2 places. the thermostat is there for a reason, it's worth keeping. Rick

How would that help with a cracked head, or no thermostat?

Neither of these addresses go to anything outboard related.

I did put tcouboards in the search and found it's tcoutboard.com instead. No cylinder heads for a 62 area johnson 18hp at either.

okay, just the cylinder head, It's not going to work because of the thermostat, there are differences in the crankcase. The passage from the t-stat housing to the exhaust housing will be left uncovered

A man who knows his motors. Thanks. I cranked the motor this morning and it spat water across the yard. You are dead on. I've picked up another head, slapped it on, and it runs perfectly. Odd for a motor sold for parts only. It had new coils, points, and condensors. I cleaned the carb and plugs. Fixed that head and it's no longer just for parts. I may keep buying these 18's.
