Can't wait for warm weather!!

Last time I took out the old fishing boat, I had two symptems and I'm not sure if they are related or not. It was the first time I had the boat out in about 6 weeks. Hoping the experts on this forum have run into this before.

1. Motor started on the first pull as usual. Vent on tank was open. However, after running at a fast idle in neutral for aproximately 30 seconds, she started to sputter and the rpms dropped rapidly. I grabbed the bulb and squeezed lightly to help her along. She coughed a bit but returned to the fast idle rpm. About 30 seconds later, she sputtered again. After doing this 4 times, with me re-priming each time, she finally ran without my help. This has happenned before, but it has never taken 4 rounds to get her to pump fuel on her own.

2. Later in the day, while running WOT, the rpm's slowly decreased and levelled off a few hundred rpm lower than what is "normal" for WOT. Motor felt underpowered and sluggish. Almost like something was restricting it. I grabbed the bulb but it was relatively solid and when I squeezed it lightly, she coughed like I was giving her too much fuel. I let go of the bulb and she sputterred back up the the sub-par rpm level that she was running at before I squeezed the bulb.

Do these issues sound related? My logic tells me the first issue could be explained by the boat having sat for about 6 weeks and the fuel pump might be getting old/weak. Once the diaphragms in the pump were brought out of their slumber, they started working well enough to pump fuel. I'm lost on the second issue because it didn't seem to be fuel related since squeezing the bulb lighlty didn't elevate the rpms.

I'm just thinking out loud here. What diagnostic steps would you guys suggest and in what order?

Thanks - Jason

The first one sounds like fuel pump... The second one, not sure... But if the first one is the fuel pump, it might solve the second one...

If the fuel pump diaphragm is shot, it could cause both symptoms. The second one (loss of power) sounds like it is running on one cylinder. Normally, that would be an ignition problem, but a holed fuel pump diaphragm can cause it too by flooding the associated cylinder. How to tell?? Remove it from themotor, leaving hoses attached. Squeeze the masher bulb. If gas squirts out the backside of the pump, diaphragm has a hole in it.

EDIT: If your motor still has the original fuel pump, it is obsolete and parts are no longer available from the mfr. Replace it with an 18-7350 or 18-7351. The 18-7351 is a simpler and better pump and worth the extra few dollars. Hose re-routing will be required. Hey, you were going to replace them anyway, weren't you?

Also, check the lines over completely. Makes sure all connections are tight and there are no air leaks.

Updated with video and pics. Thanks to F_R and everyone else for the information!!!

So... According to F_R... This is most likely my problem, right? To fix it I just need to buy/install the new pump # 18-7351, right? Are there rebuild kits available for my old one? Can you tell from the video if my old one is the original?

What do you think about this used one on ebay? Should I just pony up and buy the new one for 54.99?

Thanks again. You guys are always the best!

You can re-build it but, it's a pain in the a.., if you don't have a diagram for it. If it were me, I'd get a new one and then you're done with it. Thanks for showing us the video!

Before I order the new pump, I'm hoping you guys can confirm based on the video that my old pump is definitely bad.

Thanks!

Can't really tell from the vid. you would need to take the pump apart to see the diaphragm inside. it's a thin black rubber membrane, which can wear out and/or get tiny holes in it. however, only certain models of fuel pumps were rebuildable, most are an all-or-none device which either works or needs to be replaced. as much as it sucks, it probably is better/easier to buy a new replacement pump. I suppose you could always try to fix the old one why you wait for the new one to arrive, but I've heard it's a major pain. Thanks for the vid. Good luck getting her going.
