Can't wait for warm weather!!
Last time I took out the old fishing boat, I had two symptems and I'm not sure if they are related or not. It was the first time I had the boat out in about 6 weeks. Hoping the experts on this forum have run into this before.
1. Motor started on the first pull as usual. Vent on tank was open. However, after running at a fast idle in neutral for aproximately 30 seconds, she started to sputter and the rpms dropped rapidly. I grabbed the bulb and squeezed lightly to help her along. She coughed a bit but returned to the fast idle rpm. About 30 seconds later, she sputtered again. After doing this 4 times, with me re-priming each time, she finally ran without my help. This has happenned before, but it has never taken 4 rounds to get her to pump fuel on her own.
2. Later in the day, while running WOT, the rpm's slowly decreased and levelled off a few hundred rpm lower than what is "normal" for WOT. Motor felt underpowered and sluggish. Almost like something was restricting it. I grabbed the bulb but it was relatively solid and when I squeezed it lightly, she coughed like I was giving her too much fuel. I let go of the bulb and she sputterred back up the the sub-par rpm level that she was running at before I squeezed the bulb.
Do these issues sound related? My logic tells me the first issue could be explained by the boat having sat for about 6 weeks and the fuel pump might be getting old/weak. Once the diaphragms in the pump were brought out of their slumber, they started working well enough to pump fuel. I'm lost on the second issue because it didn't seem to be fuel related since squeezing the bulb lighlty didn't elevate the rpms.
I'm just thinking out loud here. What diagnostic steps would you guys suggest and in what order?
Thanks - Jason
