1962 40hp Gale won't start!!!!!!!!!!

Can anyone help?

I have no experience so please bare with me.
I have check compression it?s @ 100psi both cylinders
Good spark, points are good I had taken the top off of another motor that was running already and didn?t touch the points. Spark plugs are set to .030 (j4c)
When I try to start it turns over fine and then will make a loud pop like it backfires. (once and a while)
I think the timing is set up automatically. Please correct me if I?m wrong.
Where do I go from here?

go to faq forum, read Outboard won't start, awakening a sleeping outboard, and Joe Reeves carb settings. 99% chance you have a dirty carb.

Or you have the spark plug wires crossed up, bottom on top, top on bottom. That certainly will make it backfire and not start.

3rd possibility is a sheared flywheel key. When you reinstalled the flywheel, were the tapers both clean and dry and did you use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 100-105 ft/lbs? Failure to do so will shear the key, throwing it out of time and often destroys both the flywheel and crankshaft. Did I mention how important it is?

hey i have a 1962 johnson and recently went to start it for the first time on the weedend. like you, i have no experience. all i did was change the spark plugs (j4c) like you have and then tried to start it. at first all it would do was turn over and do nothing.. until i eventually got a loud bang like you described. i just kept going and giving it some choke and more throttle and the bangs came more offen until it finally just fired up and ran pretty darn good. maybe if you just do what i did your will fire up as well.. seems very similar to what mine did. i posted a video of it running in the johnson section. if you want to check it out, its caled 1962 johnson firt start

I've also heard thatwater in the gass or motor can cause bacjk firing.. i really dont know much though so i wouldnt take my wrord for it lol if you want me to post i video of when i first tried to start it while ot was back firing let me know and ill post it up.
