I am trying to remove the lower unit from a 5 1/2 hp Johnson. I believe it's a 1962 (c-19-s). I don't have the manual yet, so, I was hoping someone here could guide me. I have removed the four bolts on the lower unit but can't figure out how to disconnect the shift rod. My goal is to replace the impeller.

seems like there is a oblong cover with 2 screws you can take off and access the shift rod.

thanks for the responce! I took off a small oblong cover, but, it seems to be a water intake and there was no access to the shift rod underneath it.

I'm not 100% positive ,,probably 99% though, that Paul Moir, one of the Masters here has told me that on my 61 5 1/2, to get at the shift linkage, you MUST remove the powerhead....(and yes, another Engineer to add to the list)

Want to add that its possible the 62's were different, but I just don't know. I don't have any manuals for either year

What sort of compression does it have. If it has good even compression most other problems are an easy fix. You are already replacing the impellor which is great, then a little carb rebuild and cleaning of the points and it could be great. I love my little 5.5. Its very quiet and pretty much bullet proof. JMHO

Scatty you are correct.....I deleted most of my post above.........I was thinking of a different motor8).

Here is a quote from the manual I have in front of me
On some 1956-1964 5.5 and 7.5hp models, the powerhead must be removed and the shift rod disconnected from the shift lever before the gearcase can be removed

Paul Moir also told me to remove the power head to get to the shifter linkage which I did and as he described, take off the 2 nuts on the linkage rod and the lower unit will slide off. There are 7 bolts holding the power head on and although it looks a little tough, it is really a piece of cake. Good luck

Oh yes, when you get the impeller you will more than likely think you have the wrong one but you have to sort of "screw" the impeller into the water pump housing, turning it counter clockwise. here is a BIG help to you: go to--http://outboard-boat-motor-repair.com/Johnson%20%205.5%20hp%20seahorse%20outb... Or It may be easier to go to ----5.5 hp evinrude johnson 1954-1964 tune-up.
