1962 Cruiser Inc Restoration (Hull Repair)

Dear Readers,

I have a 1962 18ft Cruiser Inc wood boat and I am starting the restoration on the hull to make it watertight. I am making a plan for the hull. The boat has been out of the water for a while so i know it will leak a little however I still want to make repair so it will be reliebale. I have attacted photos of the boat along with some areas I believe require attention. I read that stripping the hull and resealing it is the way to go however, I am concerned with the gash and dings. I am going to keep the hull white. Any thought?

Welcome to iboats.

Once you get it sanded down you can fill those gashes and dings with marine tex or PC 11 since you will be painting over it again. If you have the room/workspace to do all the sanding and painting ....... it is not a quick job. So be prepared to dedicat allot of time. Sanding should be done with extreme care not to round out the lapstrake wood on the sides of the hull..

Properly prepared wood hulls take very nicely to paint.

Do I have to caulk in between joints before sealing? Do I have to caulk if I seal?

Here is an update in the project. The hull isn't in too bad of shape and the stripper is moving along quickly. I have decided to use cotton calking at the center keel. I'm excited to use an old time technique in a modern time.

SW: Welcome, I love wooden boats! Best of luck getting it back on the water soon. However, it would appear that there is a white obsolete outdrive in your pix showing the CitriStrip. If it's in proper working order, it could provide years of faithful service, if not, parts can be hard to come by. Same for the motor. Post up what you've got & the crew around here will help figure out what your working with. It will be a lot of work to replace them on a fully redone boat, if the motor or drive fail at some point in the future. Might want to start looking for a donor boat to scavenge the drive train out of, and repower now while you're already in demo & put back mode.

Don't look for RaptorBill to update his thread @ his Cruiser Inc project. It's been nearly 3yrs since his last post. Too bad, looked like he had made some good progress.

Welcome to the Iboats dry dock. I seem to remember reading something about using the cotton caulking but w/ a modern bedding compound.... May have been in Wooden Boat, but don't hold me too it.

I attached photos of the I/O Volvo Pento and the numbers on the transom. I am worndering if this is a Cruisers Inc. The overall lenghth is 18ft and by 75". Any thoughts?

I have almost completed the stripping and wondering if I have to caulk the joints in each plank, anybody dealt with this?

Every seam/joint in every plank...... If it was made that way, w/ caulk in the joints, it will have to go back.

Else, it's a wooden sieve not a boat

Although you may not be close to working on the engine and outdrive yet, I think there are factory manuals available online at the link below that should help you when that time comes. Good luck!
