1962 Elgin 7.5 McCulloch low profileS/N 62600710 M/N 574.60081
a question on the shifting of the unit from Neutral to Drive. When received it was stuck, I have since removed the lower cover around the prop shaft and peered inside. Once I removed prop drive shaft it freely moved up and down clearly able to see the plunger up and down. It did reveal a small ball bearing in back that gives it the stopping points that engages gear. Now, Putting everything back in place, Ive moved the leaver back into the different positions but once I push all the way up it sticks again and you cant push back down. Is this due to the drive in gear and does the shifting have to be done only when engine is running. Clearly im confused. Any help here would be appreciated.

If the motor isn't running it will be difficult to shift unless you rotate the prop or flywheel to help the clutch dog to mesh.It appears it is a weedless drive. Starting at the prop shaft it has a spring in the end with a cap then the clutch dog and the shift plunger. There is an adjustable shift rod
on the end of the shift lever. Can't really tell you to much from there. You might try" ask the scott guy"

re: scott-mc. shift prob. steelespike gives good advice, just wonderin', have you checked the shift dog for wear or burrs? may be a problem.

I recall the shifter in the weedless unit is tricky, and required extra precautions compared to the std. lower unit.
I seem to remember having to keep pressure on that shift rod during the complete assembly of the lower in to the exh hsg, and during install of the powerhead..... I think it had to stay in reverse, but not sure of that, but had to hold until everything was assembled or the ball would pop out of place and the lower would have to be disassembled again to "fix" the ball...
been a few years....foggy, but don't shift it once it's together until the shifter linkage is hooked up or you can make it over travel it's normal range quite easily
