I've got oil mixing with water somewhere in my engine. I'm getting a goopy sludge in the entire exhaust tract.

Here's what the plugs looks like

Or am I paranoid? Lower unit has to be stripped and cleaned out because it's rusty and had no oil in it :/. But my concern is with what gasket could be leaking to make the goopy sludge.

Probably one of the most often asked questions. That stuff you are seeing is somewhat normal. The oil is not a leak, it is the oil that you put in the gas. Every morsel of that oil goes through the engine. Some burns (smoke) and the rest goes out the exhaust. The cooling water is also dumped into the exhaust after doing its job of cooling the engine. So, that oil and water is mixed together and under certain conditions (like cold weather/water for instance) will emulsify into a foamy glop. That is what you are seeing.

Plug looks normal, assuming it has been run at slow speeds, somewhat. OR, there may be some other problem with the motor, causing plug fouling and/or misfiring. So, is it running normally, or not???

The rust in the lower unit is an entirely different matter and must be attended to ASAP. Be prepared, the lower unit may be trash. The pinion bearing in those 10hp motors of that era cannot stand much abuse.

It's running as rich as it can be...won't run well leaned out any...also doesn't wanna run on low end of throttle. Yeah I'm afraid what the lower end looks like inside. Might be better to look for a used one to replace with.

I knew oil was normal but had never seen the sludge. It was cold out when I ran the motor last so that could be it.

Luckily the lower end gears are in decent shape. Some rust on them but some oil remained on the clutch dog and shaft bearings. Everything still smooth. The yoke is pretty rusty but not destroyed either. I think it's all salvageable. Will be sending the lower end to a friend who will rebuild it for me properly.

You got lucky if the pinion bearing isn't destroyed (lateral wear). Perhaps it just sat with water in the gearcase, but not ran much that way.

Post a picture of the driveshaft bearing area just above the pinion gear.

??----The bearing area is on the DRIVESHAFT and above that spline.----Post a picture of that area after removing the driveshaft.

Looks good.----Clean all the parts.----Install new seals including the o-ring for the shift rod.---That o-ring is often overlooked but very important.

What kind of sealer is needed for the seals in the gearcase? My seloc says sealer 1000....but what kind of sealer can be used in place of that?

3M Scotchgrip 847 is the direct replacement for NLA Sealer 1000.
