Several years back I picked up this little 5.5 at a yard sale along with a 1982 Johnson 9.9. I have been using the 9.9 for about five yrs. I just put the 5.5 in the shed. I just decided to see about getting it running. This thing looks like it has had about 20 trips on it. I don't think it has ever had a wrench on it. I put it in a barrel, shot a little gas up the carb and after about 20 pulls she busted off. Runs like a champ. The next mourning I pulled the choke and pulled it once, she fired right up. I am not sure if the waterpump is working. I know I sould replace it anyway. I pulled the four bolts on the lower unit, the foot is loose but it seems like maybe something to do with the shifter may be holding it. Is there something else to remove? I have changed impellers on Merc's and never had this problem. Im an auto mechanic so dont be afraid to get technical. Thanks, Chris

Nothing high tech, but you have to pull the powerhead to disconnect the shift rod. I say again--and again--and again, when you get the powerhead off, you will find a carbon seal on the top end of the drive shaft. That seal is vital to the health of the powerhead. Make sure it is assembled correctly, and use a new gasket 303355 and o-ring 303347 (parts of the seal). You probably will also need a new powerhead gasket.
