When I started the engine this year it spewed gas out the carb and died so I rebuilt the carb and replaced the float. She starts and runs now but idles pretty rough. I think it has to do with adjustments so I could use some help.

1. The carb has a single dial to adjust Lean or Rich that is limited to one turn when the knob is installed. Do I adjust the mix without the knob installed and then install the knob halfway in between to allow for tweeking ?

2. Is the mixture screw for high speed and idle or just high speed ?

3. Is there a differant place to adjust the idle mixture?

4. Does anyone have a write-up on the propoer procedure to adjust the carb, idle, etc, after a rebuild ?

Thanks

Re: 1962 Evinrude Lark 40HP Carb. Adjustment

The single knob is for the idle mixture only. Has no noticeable effect on the high speed. The high speed is a fixed jet orfice plug in the bottom of the carb bowl, deep behind the hex plug.

Before adjusting, warm up the motor and make sure the choke is open all the way. Have the hood on and open the door to adjust, then close the door to see if it is stable. To adjust the slow speed knob, start with it open 1 1/2 turns from lightly seated. Turn it to the right till the motor coughs or sneezes then turn it back to the left till it quits the sneezing. Put the knob on pointing straight up and forget it.

Hint, you can put the knob on backwards (inside out) then you can twirl it around without the stops touching. Then put it back on properly when finished adjusting.

Note: if it won't run properly with the hood on, that is a different story. First if you have it in a barrel, get it out of there and on a boat in the water. You can't do it properly in a barrel. Also, if in the water and it won't run properly with the hood on but will with the hood off, somebody has left the o-ring off the top of the water pump or there is an exhaust leak under the hood.
