1962 (or '63 ?) Johnson 75 hp Starflite IV electric shift (v-4) with automotive-style battery ignition (points, coil, and distributor - belt driven).

I just bought this motor and am synchronizing the throttle and timing linkages. What are the idle-speed and WOT spark advances? Any markings on the flywheel are no longer visible, but I am assuming that I can find TDC of the #1 cylinder and then mark the flywheel accordingly with reference to the timing mark stamped on the engine block.

Would it be a safe assumption to set idle-speed advance around 2-4 degrees and then adjust the linkages to achieve the maximum advance at WOT?

Re: 1962 johnson 75 timing (spark advance)

I'll give this a shot. It's been nearly a decade, but here goes...

There are timing marks on the pulley and housing on the distributor. Set the points to break at those marks. I believe there is one nub on the pulley and two on the housing 180 degrees apart.

Then there is a mark on the bracket that mounts the distributor to the block. At idle, one of the marks on the distributor base should line-up with the mark on the bracket. The two screws on the advance link is where you adjust that.

You might try your public library for a book on the subject. It's hard to picture what I've described, and I'm going by memory...I could be wrong.

Hi acclark,
I just looked in my old book and it shows a timing mark below the ring gear on the flywheel. The other one on the cylinder cover about where the distributor mounting bracket is. The book shows pulling the manual start cover. The other marks on distributor are on the pully tooth, and dis. housing infront of safety switch. These should line up at closed throttle.

acclark,
I have a ’63 manual for the Starflite and Speedifour 75 HP which explains the timing clearly. If you email me a fax number I will be happy to fax you the relevant parts of the manual.
Luck,
Butch
