First off. . . I am very new to outboard stuff. I need to replace my impeller in a Johnson 1962 75 hp outboard with electronic shift. I have called around to the marine stores in the area and none of them say they work on outboards that old, except one who said it would be a ton of money to work on it. I was wondering if this is a doable thing for me to do or if I should try and find someone who can help me once I have a new impeller. I know how to do basic maintenance and how to remove the prop but have not gone beyond that.

Also, the gear case seals could use replacing because I am getting some water in the gear oil. Is that doable or should I really have someone do this? I have found a few gear case seal sets online. Thanks for the help for a newbie.

i have done a 71 50hp, would not do it again. the wiring harness to the lower unit is going to be very brittle, and are not available.

Replacing the impeller and seals is not a difficult job if you know what you are doing. The shops won't touch it because they don't know what they are doing on one that old. And even if they do know how to fix it, they know that you won't want to pay the bill.

All the seals except the o-ring between the upper and lower gearcases is replaceable without gearcase dis-assembly. If for any reason the gearcase has to come apart, special tools are required and if it has ever touched salt water it can be a royal PITA to get it apart.

With all the drawbacks, I still like them and don't shy away from them. I'd fix it for you.
