I am resealing lower unit on a 1962 Johnson. I got a seal kit from Sierra. So here is what the original drive shaft seal looks like.

The new seal looks like this

So the new seal looks to be thinner and a C shape. Does the C go towards the interior of the gear box or towards the exterior. I am assuming towards the gear box. What is the best way of installing it? I also purchase a new end cap as well as the current one is obviously broken.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Well, I would purchase a new seal housing, as well. The one in your picture looks pretty eaten up, from corrosion. Yes, the C goes toward the inside. Otherwards, you look inside the seal and see the spring band? That goes toward the gearcase.

Thanks.. Assume the seal housing is the aluminum piece. Pictures below.

Any trick to putting the seal into the housing? I had planned on putting everything between two blocks of wood and then using a C-clamp to squeeze it all together.

I think I used the old seal placed on top of the new seal and tapped them in (if the old seal was not damaged too much). The wood idea should work OK as well. Also, sockets of the proper size work good to put on top and tap them in.

If I recall, I had to buy the specific drive shaft seal again since the sierra kit had the wrong one in it for the drive shaft. My motor was a 1961 5.5HP.

I use a socket of the same size to get it started straight, then I put the assembly in my large vise and squeeze the seal in.

Yep, like lindy46, I use a comparable size socket to get it started.

OK....I drove it in with a socket that just barely fit into the seal. It looks a little thin compared to the one I pulled out. Hope it is the right part from Sierra.

The new shift shaft o-rings that come in the reseal kits are much thicker than the old ones and should do a better job keeping things nice and water tight. Putting a bit of vaseline of the tip of the lower shift rod during reinstallation will help it slide through more easily.
