Just got a 1962 rk-24l, and replaced points and condensers. When I was looking at the base plate where the points go I saw that the plate turns rather freely. I think this advances the timming but when I tryed to start it the plate jumps back and forth real fast. It will start but backfires, then shuts off. should this plate be under some tention and advance with the throttle. Thanks

Welcome to Iboats, Mike!

It sounds as though your armature plate is so loose that you really can't keep the engine timed. If it moves, setting the points to precisely .020" is, well, pointless. :)
Fortunately, IBoats member Joe Reeves came up with a simple fix for that situation:

The armature plate should be attached to the vertical throttle shaft by a brass plate linkage and a stiff spring. I don't think it's possible to be missing either of those and still have the armature plate turn at all, but are they still attached anyway?
