Yes, the Merc 500 does have reverse. I belive all of the 4 cyl models did except for the very first one in the late 40's. Mercury did make a few 6 cyl non shifting models. The Mark 75 and Mark 78 as well as the Merc 600, 700, 800 of the early 60's were direct reversing models with no neutral. You started the motor in forward or reverse. I think they were phased out in 62.
