1962 Mercury steering tilt tube diameter

I am looking for guidance regarding a steering cable for my 1962 mercury 850. My current steering arm measures looks to be 5/8" diameter and the tube looks to be 1/2". I do not have inside and outside calipers and am trying to measure using crude tools. Does anyone actually know what the diameter of a 1962 Mercury 850 steering tube is?

Don't know off hand the specs, but most all late 60, into 70 to the end years, all the same

you have the same problem i do, mine is a 1957 Mark 75 with the small diameter tilt tube. I also have a 1964 650 Merc with the large diameter tube. To date I have been unable to find a steering cable that will fit the Mark 75 tilt tube.

I know I didn't give you actual measurements, but only confirmed Mercury went to a larger diameter tilt tube sometime after 1957 and before 1964.

I have a 1971 800 Merc that has a small tilt tube.
