I've got a 1962 QD-23A (bad powerhead-good lower unit) I also just aquired a 1963 QD-24B (good powerhead, but a bad lower unit). Total investment $60. I'm going to build one runner out of the two.

The 62's (left in picture) lower cowl pan seems to be bolted securely through the lower leg. The 63's lower cowl pan is *not* bolted through, but sits on two cupped pads on the lower leg, making it the whole lower cowling and top cover undesirably floppy and flexxy. You can see me separating the pan from the lower leg in the picture.

Nothing is broken or appears to be missing. What gives? Is one of these wrong? I have parts manuals for both motors, and neither is particularly clear or specific.

Insight appreciated.

Nevermind. I figured it out...
The 63 was missing some spacers/bushings. A previous owner was horrible to this little motor. Lots of little random parts missing. Ironic that the 62 was babied and is cosmetically nice, but has deeply scored cylinder walls, the 63 has been ravaged, but the powerhead internals are still excellent.

Broken rubber cowl mounts (as on your '63) were very common. Even way back when they were fairly new. The rubbed comes "unglued" from the metal studs on each end. No, they weren't actually glued but formed in liquid form and bonded as they solidified.

The 62-63 were the best years for the 10hp powerhead. They had excellent bearings. There is a demand for the pistons and connecting rods for repairing/updating older powerheads. Too bad your pistons are scored.

I may have some of those bushings - intact ;) - in my pile-o-parts. Let me know if you want me to dig around for them...

Is there a particularly smart adhesive choice to put the separated rubber cowl mounts back together?

Also, what made the 62 and 63 better than say, a 61 or 64? I'm thinking about seeing if I can salvage the 62 powerhead with a honing, but I'm not too confident.

Answer to my question, because there was no 64 model. Duh.

Thanks for the links, I'm reading them at the dinner table, and my dinner's getting ignored :)

The 10s got little improvements over their 15-year run, ultimately making the 1963 quite a different beast from the original 1949 model. The final incarnations had needle bearings on the wrist pins - a big improvement over the bronze babbit bearings that tended to hog out over time and get loosey-goosey. Improvements in the powerhead were kinda offset, though, by a step back in the lower units. in 1958 they moved the 10 to the 5.5/7.5 lower unit, with some changes. Still made for a unit that was on the edge and didn't take the abuse that the 1957 & earlier units could. It did make for a slightly faster motor, though, as the newer unit had a smaller profile...
