1962 West Bend ignition problem

I have a 1962 40-hp West Bend outboard that's run great for the past few years. The last time we took it out, though, it suddenly refused to crank, just complete silence. I assumed it was a loose wire somewhere but couldn't find one.

Anyway, I followed the wires into the motor and just before they go into the starter they go into and out of a little lump which I believe is a solenoid. There is current going in but not coming out, even when I crank it.

I take it to mean my solenoid's dead, but I really have no idea what I'm doing so I thought I'd ask...

If it is, how closely do I have to match the part to replace it? Can I go find any 12-volt marine starter solenoid?

cheers,

doug

Re: 1962 West Bend ignition problem

Hi Doug
Make sure your battery is fully charged. Remove and clean all electrical connections having to do with the starting circut, especialy the grounds. Corrosion can build up under the connection where it can not be seen. Once this is done and you still have no start, get a short length of fairly heavy wire. First jump from the battery side of the solenoid to the "S" pole (the small wire in the middle of the solenoid). You should hear a click and the starter will turn. If this is the case then your ignition switch is bad, or the wire from it. If you still get nothing, Jump the two large poles, the one from the batt and the one to the starter motor. If the starter motor spins, your Solenoid is bad. You may order a new one from Napa auto parts #18-2818 from their marine catolog.

I won't be able to try it out until morning, but based on a simple reading I think that may be the single most helpful response I've ever had on the 'net for anything.

Thanks very much!

Re: 1962 West Bend ignition problem

Hi Doug
Just a bit more here that might help with finding parts and info in the future. The WestBend Co. was bought out by Chrysler to form Chrysler marine div. This happened about 1964-65. Chrysler marine was then sold to U.S Marine (Force), which was bought out by Mercury. So if you ask the person at Napa for WestBend parts chances are pretty good they will give you a funny look and tell you they can't get any. Also if you look for a manual for early Chryslers it will, for the most part work for West Bend as well.
