After running my 1963 18 HP Evinrude in a barrel I notice that there is quite a bit of oil on the surface of the water. Where do you suppose that is coming from?

It's coming from the oil/gas mixture you are running to run the motor, don't worry about it.

That's why 2 strokes are so bad to run in the lakes, they puke oil!

So I assume that would be a good reason to run the more environmentally friendly oils. How do they rate vs the standard stuff?

Anything that puts oil in the water is bad IMO. I have never researched it , I do know from reading different posts that some are better than others for producing less smoke.

Have used Penzoil Synthetic Blend for a number of years. Makes less smoke so I assume more of it gets burnt and less goes in the water. This oil has been tested by marinas and other users and has performed perfectly.
Wally world used to carry it and at a good price. I have just ordered a 3 gallon case from my local Shell/Penzoil distributor. Way better that anything else I have tried without the ridiculous price from Mercury for "their product" which is now at Wally World..

Ok, I let the water in the barrel sit for a couple hours and came back, stuck my finger in and it came out covered with black oil. Not just a little oil. But a lot. This doesnt seem right. The ratio I used was 5.2 oz oil and 1 gallon gas. Which I'm thinking is only .2 too much oil. Isnt that about 24:1 which is what the Evinrude web site calls for? The decal info is: 18302E-E11395. I believe I got the year right.

Still think this is normal?
