Re: 1963 40hp eletramatic wiring???
OK, to begin, you have the wrong ignition switch. What you have is for battery ignition, not magneto ignition. Battery ignition is used on both cars and outboards, thus the confusion.
Your generator is not hooked up to anything the way you have it. That voltmeter should be an ammeter. However, a voltmeter would also work, but takes a different hookup.
Hookup is as I said. Brown to Gen side of ammeter, thick green to bat side of ammeter, a jumper from the bat terminal on the ignition switch to the ammeter.
I am trying to keep it simple here, so don't read on--but you can if you want more info. That jumper can go to either terminal on the ammeter. If you put it on the Gen side, anything connected to the ignition accessory terminal (like a radio) will show a net charge/discharge at the ammeter. Put it on the bat side, it won't. OMC often put them on the bat side but it truly belongs on the gen side. Also, OMC often put the heavy green on the key switch, jumpered to the ammeter. Putting the heavy green on the ammeter and jumpered to the key switch is the same thing. Doing it the OMC way, you need a 12ga jumper. Doing it my way, a 16ga is enough. 12ga in either situation is OK too.
If you insist on using the voltmeter, connect both brown and green to the bat terminal at the igniton switch. Then a wire from the (I) terminal to the (+) side of the voltmeter. Put the grey (tach ground) wire on the (-) side of the voltmeter.
Are you confused yet?
