Hey guys got the above motor on a 78 Chapperal and I need to figure out the wiring. Has an ignition switch but not orignal to the boat or motor I am sure of that.I have a manual but the wiring does not give color of wires so its pretty hard to figure out. The starter will turn over with the key and the lights work but there is 4 wires up at console that are hanging there? 2 are black 16g 1 is grey 16g and the last one is brown and it is a 12g. Any info would be great. Thanks

Re: 1963 40hp eletramatic wiring???

The two black wires go to the two "M" terminals on the ignition switch. They stop the motor when the key is turned to off.

The grey is for a tachometer. Actually, it's a tachometer ground on the 40hp. One of the "M" terminals serve as a tach signal. Special magneto tach required.

The brown one comes from the voltage regulator and goes to an ammeter (gen terminal) in the dash. Should be a 12ga green going from the ammeter (bat terminal) back to the + cable nut on the starter solenoid. Also a jumper between the ammeter and ign switch Bat terminal.

EDIT: It takes a special ignition switch for magneto ignitions. A battery ignition (car) switch will NOT work, and will melt a coil in the magneto.

Re: 1963 40hp eletramatic wiring???

Thanks for the info but my switch has B term S term and I term on the back of it. It is not a car one though it came with a cluster of Teleflex guages. I found a old push button in the glove box and there is a two wire rocker switch still in the dash but there was no wires hooked up to it???? Not sure where to go from here. The green wire is hooked to the B term on the switch and there is no ampmeter in the dash but there is a volt guage???Well what do you think?
I can also take some pics for you if that would help

Re: 1963 40hp eletramatic wiring???

OK, to begin, you have the wrong ignition switch. What you have is for battery ignition, not magneto ignition. Battery ignition is used on both cars and outboards, thus the confusion.

Your generator is not hooked up to anything the way you have it. That voltmeter should be an ammeter. However, a voltmeter would also work, but takes a different hookup.

Hookup is as I said. Brown to Gen side of ammeter, thick green to bat side of ammeter, a jumper from the bat terminal on the ignition switch to the ammeter.

I am trying to keep it simple here, so don't read on--but you can if you want more info. That jumper can go to either terminal on the ammeter. If you put it on the Gen side, anything connected to the ignition accessory terminal (like a radio) will show a net charge/discharge at the ammeter. Put it on the bat side, it won't. OMC often put them on the bat side but it truly belongs on the gen side. Also, OMC often put the heavy green on the key switch, jumpered to the ammeter. Putting the heavy green on the ammeter and jumpered to the key switch is the same thing. Doing it the OMC way, you need a 12ga jumper. Doing it my way, a 16ga is enough. 12ga in either situation is OK too.

If you insist on using the voltmeter, connect both brown and green to the bat terminal at the igniton switch. Then a wire from the (I) terminal to the (+) side of the voltmeter. Put the grey (tach ground) wire on the (-) side of the voltmeter.

Are you confused yet?

That's fine. I'll be out all day today though. I'll check in when I get back.
