The motor is a 40 hp 1963 Big Twin Evinrude. I just replaced the water pump and made sure that the two tubes are in the correct position. when you start the motor Im not getting any water out of the back exhaust port. Runnign it on the lake the engine ran very hot to the point you couldnt keep your hand on it and we towed it back.

I removed the Head and water jacket and there was nothing blocking any of the ports. I removed the a small plate on top of the motor that ad three screws holding it on, water shot out of the this port just fine. I was thinking a thermostat would be mounted under the cover but there was nothing or someone removed it.

So the questons are.....
1. Should there be a lot of water coming out of the exhaust port in the back runnig at idle?
2. If water is flowing thru the plate on top can I assume the water pump is working good?
3. If the thermostat is not mounted under the small plate on top where is it?
4. There is another port above the exhaust port on the back. The lower port has a rubber tube that allows exhaust to pass thru the cover on the back. What is the upper port for? Should it connect to anything?

I attack some pictures to show the port above the exhaust and the water flowing out of the top of the motor.

Please look at the last few pictures of the link below...

There is supposed to be a black plastic thermostat housing in the cavity under the triangular plate. There is also supposed to be a white plastic relief valve and special spring under the black housing. There is also supposed to be a thermostat in the black housing. There is also supposed to be a Welsh plug in the upper cavity on the rear.

Put all the pieces back in the motor and it should work.

Often called "freeze" plug, or "core" plug, it is a round disc that is slightly cupped. You put it in the hole and flatten it out, which makes it expand tightly in the hole. Just be careful not to go beyond flat, as that would make it loose again.

Do you know where you can buy Welsh plugs?

Well there are many different sizes and materials available. That's the problem, trying to find the one you need. The best way is just get one from a Evinrude or Johnson dealer. Part number is 307541
