My engine will not go into fwd easily nor will it stay in fwd. Reverse is fine. I can get it into fwd by throttling down almost to idle and then it goes into fwd. Sometimes, I can accelerate for a few minutes and it will stay in gear. Some times it will not. t opened up the shift box and used contact cleaner on the switch and checked the switch connectors. It all appears OK. Any ideas on what to check and how???

  • Hopefully you're using Premium Blend gearcase lube, also known as Type C. You cannot use the standard gearlube that is used on the standard shift models.
The problem you're encountering is normally caused by a scoring between the forward shift spring and the forward hub. The cure unfortunately, if you can find those two components, is very expensive... cheaper to simply replace the lower unit. If you're using Hi-Vis gearlube, drain and get rid of it, then refill with Premium Blend Gearcase lube.

I have used type "C" lube. I would like to keep the motor original if possible. I have overhauled lower units before including an electric hydra shift on a 100hp Evinrude. The manual says the coils should read 6 ohms, but there is no mention of what the voltage should be at the coil connectors. The motor would stay in FWD once I was able to get it into gear before I cleaned the shifter switch contacts. Any other ideas. I am looking up the parts you mentioned in case I need to go there.

Problem turned out to be the console switched. I was able to clean them with contact cleaner throught the little holes in the switch. Found an NOS switch for $80, but will see if cleaning will work OK before I get a new switch.
