1963 65 hp merc trouble shifting into reverse gear

took the boat out for the first time 2 weeks ago. motor runs great, lots of power...but occassionally would not shift into reverse, unless I manually pushed the shift bar. we were operating in windy, sandy conditions (eastern colorado reservoir)...should i apply spray lube or change the gear oil, adjust the cable?

if it works when you manually shift, then it is<br />a problem with the cable. I suggest replacement<br />if you got the $ along with the throttle cable.<br />I don't like to take chances with old cables that<br />can break, but that's just me. lots of folks have<br />lubed old cables successfully...<br />do a search above under stuck cables and read all<br />the remedies that have been tried.<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.
