1963 850 Whats it worth and What to check?

I have located a 63 i belive SN 1577xxx motor that i cna buy for the cost of a new starter i dont know much about these old motors and can only say that the #6 wire has made a good snack for a rat and the flywheel will turn by hand with all the plugs in it. Can any body tell me if this motor is worth buying or will the parts be too hard to get for it? The skeg is only about 3 inches long and the 2 blade brass prop isnt seated against the unit it hits the trim tab when you turn it so im not sure what all might be wrong can somebody tell me if parts are readily avail and what to check to see if its worth trying? If it was a runner with all it's wires intact it would be worth $270

(up to $675 if beautifully restored)

But with one of it's wires gnawed away and of questionable condition about $125

Parts, who needs parts?

Most of the small stuff like carb needle/seats, fuel pump kits, and impellers are still available through a mercury dealer and a heck of a lot cheaper than the stuff you might find for one of these later model imports.

HI there , I bought a used boat here [from a guy around the corner}in the spring , it had a 1978, 900 on it .The GUY said it was a runner !!! Well it wasnt , now I took his word on it . Had to get toed in twice !! @&*$^*@)&!@&$^$#*#$H#*$ The cylinders were shot number 3 was down to 65 lbs 2 and 4 were at 85 ... Well heres where I can kind of help Found a 1962 1000 had him check the comp, and they were all 140 , changed the Impeller and took her out and she scoots , now for parts http://www.oldmercs.com/1963merc850.htm and ebay has just about anything , so i guess check the cylinders and go from there , if you dont mind a little work , it could be a TOWER OF POWER once again !!!! Am I right Guys John
