1963 Evinrude 10 hp Sportwin HOT

Good Morning -
Is anything else I should be looking for besides a bum impeller water pump when I remove my lower unit. I took my Sportwin out for a short ride at low speed last Sunday, when I had been about 200 yards I noticed the motor just sounded different, running smooth, just different. I'm pretty sensitive to changes, etc. Anyway, I looked back at the exhaust and it looked like it was peeing ok. In addition to peeing out both sides, does it also pee out the exhaust port? Anyway, I slowed down to idle speed and was preparing to shut the motor off when it shut it self off. I took off the cover and it was HOT. Not seized up HOT but still really hot. It was late and getting dark and I had to pack up to come back to work and so I didn't get a chance to do anything else. About two months ago, I installed a brand new impeller and its been running cool and smooth ever since. Any thoughts?

If you drove through the 'loon poop' (swampy bottom), you could have plugged the cooling system to overheat. That stuff will often just fall out when you shut down. So, start it and see if you get a good water discharge out the rear exhaust port (should always have good discharge there). Good luck!

Hi Jonathan. Yes, the motor should pump water mixed with exhaust gas at all times out of the main port on the back of the motor. If it does not, shut the motor down immediately until the problem is resolved. At this point, I would definitely change the impeller. Take care to make sure the passage is still clear before hitting the water again. Here's a vid of what your motor should look like at all times. Btw, what fuel oil mix are you using? You'll need at least 50:1, but I would runt 24:1 for at least one tank to relube the innards.

Was it an OEM impeller or aftermarket?

If it is still pumping, I wouldn't drop the gearcase just yet. Check the intakes for debris as mentioned. Pull the thermostat cover, remove the thermostat assembly and start the motor briefly. Does water shoot out of the hole?

Test the thermostat to ensure it opens and closes as it should in a pot of boiling water.

Thank you kbait; I wasn't motoring through swampy or shallow bottom, but was, however, putting at just above idle speed for 10-15 minutes or so. I will give a careful look to the intake to be sure it's not plugged up. JWS

Thanks kfa4303 - I'll be sure to be sure passage is clear before cranking. The vid of what the motor should look like is impressive. What a thing of beauty. I've been running 50:1 since beginning of this year when Land Marine (and OEM Evinrude/Johnson shop w/30+ yrs experience) said to b/c today's oils are much more efficient than the old Mobil oil I used to run 50 years ago, though they did make nice buoys when you could get the anchor lines just right so the white containers stood straight up. Good suggestion to run a tank of 24:1 through to "greeze the innards" after getting hot. I wouldn't have thought of that. Best, JWS

Thanks HighTrim - I'll remove the thermostat, start and check the water discharge. Funny, even though I run my 1989 Mastercraft ProStar 190 w/351 Indmar without a thermostat, I didn't think to check mine. With a new impeller (OEM) there's a good chance the thermo is the problem.

The impeller is OEM - bought it from Land Marine Evinrude Johnson shop - Robert Land been working on the OMCs for 30+ yrs. JWS
