Do the spark plug wires come out the sides of the distributor cap or are they pointed straight down ??

The biggest problem those magnetos had was with a bad rotor grounding out. Just a thought.

Agreed, the rotor was a common problem. But don't jump to conclusions. Remove the distributor cap and see if it produces a spark off the coil button. If it does, you know everything is ok up to that point and check out the cap and rotor & wires. No spark off the coil button? Well you get the picture..........

I've got good all the way to the coil. Then nothing. How do I check a rotor?

With out the proper test equipment, just replace it. Will the spark jump a 1/4" open air gap from the button on the coil ??

From the botton to where? Do I just hold the cap near the button and fire it up?

Spark doesn't jump. There is no spark

If the rotor is defective the spark will go through it and ground out on the metal shaft the rotor sits on.
If you remove the cap and spin the engine over, do you get a spark at the points when they open and close, if so replace the rotor.

Rotors can be intermittent. They can work fine until the motor heats up and then arc to ground. First get spark to coil button. Clean points and check wiring. If those are good, replace condenser. Check coli for cracks.

Cheap spark tester.... attach a piece of wire with a alligator clip to the coil button, attach the other end of the wire with a alligator clip to the shank of a small screwdriver. Hold the shank of the screwdriver 1/4" away from the powerhead while someone cranks the engine.

If you have spark from the coil... replace the rotor, part #580260.

If still no spark... bad condenser, dirty points, points set wrong, wire on side of magneto that leads to points and coil is grounded, something of that nature.

OK so I took it to a buddy and he chased some bad wires and is getting spark. Now the problem is the people who owned it before me ruined the plug wires. How do I change them? They won't screw out and are like soldered in. Do I need to replace wires and cap

Try harder to screw them out. If they won't, yes you'll need a new cap and wires.

OK so I might be confused but. Do they screw out from inside or from outside? The wire is just coming apart

From the outside. They could be corroded. Try some PB Blaster on them.
