I have a 1963 Evinrude Big Twin 40HP. model 40353D. In 1994 it had the water pump and head gasket replaced, the carb re-built and the engine tuned up. It has been in indoor storage since and has not been started since 1994. I purchased the boat it is on in 2001, and am just about finished restoring it. Here is what I have done so far to ther motor prior to trying to start it. I purchased a new gas tank, am using the old gas line but cleaned it thouroughly. I removed the spark plugs and sprayed in some fogging oil. I then turned the motor over a few times with the plugs out. I then connected the gas line, pumped it up and tried to start the engine. It is turning over fine but does not appear to be firing. When I remove the plugs they don't appear to be wet and I can't smell gas so It is not fludded. Any suggestions on what to do next?

The carb is probably gummed up from old gas stored in it for many years. You'll have to pull it apart and clean it up and rebuild it. If you have the generator on that engine it's a lotta work to get the carb off.

I think you're right. I pulled the plugs and squirted some gas in and it fired right up, but only for a few seconds. It does look like a major job getting the carb off and apart. I may need to get some help on this. Thanks for your input

I'm not sure if your comment means you need professional help or assistance from the experts here on the forum. If you are DIY, the link below may be helpful. It is a free online public library that has outboard motor service information saved in pdf format. These are non-factory manuals that cover multiple models and are not anywhere close to being as complete as a "factory" manual but the price is right and it is immediately available.

LOGIN as directed then drill down to: Small Engines, Marine/Boat Motors, Evinrude/Johnson, Outboard 35HP (1956-1964), Condensed Service Data. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I think I may have lucked out on this one. I took the front part of the carb apart and sprayed everthing I could see with carb cleaner. I then discovered a drain screw near the bottom of the carb. When I removed it out poured about 3/4 of a cup of gas that looked like apple juice. I pumped the ball untill fresh gas came out. I returned the screw pumped up the ball and it started right up. I ran it for about a minute and it ran fine but started to miss abit. When I manually turned the choke off it stalled. I waited a few minutes and started it again and it did the same thing. I am wondering, does the automatic choke eventually turn it self off, and if so what would I need to adjust to keep it running smoothly, and or not stall before the choke shutts off? Thanks again for your feedback.

What you did is prove that it needs carb work. By running only with the choke on it means that fuel is not getting through the ports in the carb and that they are clogged. Only running with the choke on is a classic symptom. You need to remove and clean and rebuild the carb. Sorry but you gotta do it!

And yes, the auto choke is supposed to turn off when it warms up. (this would mean the front butterfly valve would be fully open or horizontal)

Makes sence to clean and re-build the carb. I may have to get someone to do this for me. One other question, How do I know if the water pump is working properly? I have the motor in a barrel of water. When it is running the water in the barrel is definetely being splashed around. The water pump was replaced before it was stored.

You need a service manual for your motor.
