Hi everyone, I am having some issues with my motor. I have a 63 johnson 18 horse.

I just replaced the coils, points/cond, plugs and fuel pump and rebuilt the carb. The motor fired right up, but I can't get it to stay running right. It seems to be running real rich then putters out after a few seconds. I get the occasional backfire too. I can get it to stay running for a while with the choke partially on.

Points are set to 0.020, gas is fresh, mixed 24:1.

I feel like its probably the carb still, but I just went through it and replaced gaskets, float, needle/seat. I blew it out with compressed air. Should I take it back apart and soak it? Any ideas?

Thanks
Jed

Make sure your Low speed setting is at 1 1/2 turns out. You could drain the carb too, incase there's any particles laying in the bottom. If these little tricks don't work, then I would say, disassemble the carb and soak it. The carbs on these old 18's are pretty co-operative, so it shouldn't take much to get it working right.
