My 1963 Johnson let me down today. I've been tinkering with it and have never used it in the lake. I ran it for about an hour at various times yesterday in a test tank. It was hesitant to idle, but ran ok.
However, it did shock me very mildly several times when I touched it. I found a pinched wire behind a nut and thought that was why. Since it ran well, I took it to the lake today for a test run first time out.
It cranked right up at the ramp, but shut off after a minute or two of idling. Then it never started again. Acted like it was getting no spark. Now I'm wondering if a coil going out could have been the source of the shocks. Is that possible? What else could it be?
I had intended to replace the coils, points, and condensers anyway since I bought it as a non-running motor, but had thought maybe I could enjoy the lake for a day today before replacing them. Maybe that was wishful thinking.
I was a little ticked that after running it so long yesterday before taking it out that it never even really got started today. I would almost feel better if it had taken me to the other end of the lake, then made me thumb a ride back.
What could have caused the shocks? Is there something I should be looking for? It was a mild shock, not like touching a plug or anything.
Thanks.
