1963 Johnson 40hp SHOCKING me

My 1963 Johnson let me down today. I've been tinkering with it and have never used it in the lake. I ran it for about an hour at various times yesterday in a test tank. It was hesitant to idle, but ran ok.

However, it did shock me very mildly several times when I touched it. I found a pinched wire behind a nut and thought that was why. Since it ran well, I took it to the lake today for a test run first time out.

It cranked right up at the ramp, but shut off after a minute or two of idling. Then it never started again. Acted like it was getting no spark. Now I'm wondering if a coil going out could have been the source of the shocks. Is that possible? What else could it be?

I had intended to replace the coils, points, and condensers anyway since I bought it as a non-running motor, but had thought maybe I could enjoy the lake for a day today before replacing them. Maybe that was wishful thinking.

I was a little ticked that after running it so long yesterday before taking it out that it never even really got started today. I would almost feel better if it had taken me to the other end of the lake, then made me thumb a ride back.

What could have caused the shocks? Is there something I should be looking for? It was a mild shock, not like touching a plug or anything.

Thanks.

You had good intentions with the coils and stuff. Now do it. And the plug wires also. Don't know about the shocks. What were you touching?

EDIT: Let me think about the various ground wires on that motor.

I was touching the place where the throttle control mounts one time and the top of the recoil housing one time. Thanks for the quick reply.

Don't know if the coils, points, condensers are the problem, but I'll get them before I take it out again. Weird that it started right up, then wouldn't even come close. Also made me wonder if there was a safety not made somewhere. I don't know. I'm learning as I go.

Anybody got thoughts on the shocking? I haven't had time to replace the coils yet(hopefully tomorrow), but would like to handle both problems at once if possible.

Thanks.

You could try starting it after dark tonight, with the cowel removed look for sparks. new points, plugs, an condinser would be a good place to start !

could be a spark plug wire rubbed on something.

Mine shocked me when I had a short in the off position of the key. Since I repaced the wire I don't get shocked. I think you may have a faulty ground
