finally got my motor up and running..tested forward neutral reverse, at home new type- c oil...took it out on the river here, was running well, doin a good speed then it started jumping out of gear..slowed down turned around to go back to dock, still jumping out of gear....got it back, mostly in reverse, loaded it up got it home goes into forward when motor not running, try to spin prop and it is not coming out...not sure if the cable was pulling the lever far enough ahead and that was causing the problem or not..i checked the shift rod and it is attached, did not come apart... i was hopin thats what the problem was...any help would be appreciated..I have a lower unit off a 61 evinrude.. I am assuming I can use this(if it has good parts)to rebuild the 63 or can i just swap them??the 61 has jb weld at the top of the unit..which is why I am hesitant to use it..any help please

Well, first, if it's a mechanical shift, you should not be using the Type C oil. That is lighter in weight and designed for electric shift motors. But that probably wouldn't have caused the motor to jump out of gear at speed. You either have a mis-adjusted shift cable, have play in the shift rod or you have a bad clutch dog/forward gear. Did you try disconnecting the shift cable and shift manually? If that solves the problem, then you just need to adjust the cable. If it still jumps, put her in forward and see if you can move the shift rod with a long-nosed pliers through the port in the side of the leg. If no play, then you're looking at a worn clutch dog/forward gear.

No, it's liquid gear oil, like motor oil but thicker and smellier. I'm surprised that the manual calls out Type C for a manual shift motor. Usually manual shifts use 80-90W marine gear oil.

well the oil that came out of it looked to be pretty thick, but the type-c is much thinner, would this cause problems with finding forward??gonna drain the oil out and make sure there is no metal in it, and go from there

Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a copy of the service manual for your motor.

Bought one from Iboat 2 weeks ago for my Lark VIII '66, a 10-3/8'' / 11.5'' , brand new. Michigan Match seems to be good repalcement props. One of my 2 original prop started to slip.

found 2 used props locally, just gotta get the boat back on the water..motor runs very well, was doing about 25 mph with the wrong prop on it..hoping for 35 or better, maybe I'm dreaming, but hope is a good thing....I have a 1962 17.5' Munro Adventurer, you think I can get up this fast? I am now running a 10.5" prop w/12" pitch, instead of the 9"x9"

A 40hp Lark on my 14' Glasspar pushed it about 32-33mph. I don't think 25mph on a 17.5 foot boat is all that bad.

my boat was actually slower with the proper prop????what effect does trim position have on speed?this motor has manual trim, but it is hard to take it out and change trim position in the water..
