Hey guys. I have started a restoration of a 1963 Starcraft 17' Permier. The boat had been stored outside for ~15 years so needless to say the deck, transom, and stringers are shot.

I have been reading a lot of good info on the boards but am wondering if anyone has any idea how many stringers there are on this boat. I would guess 3 that run from the bow to the stern and 3 connectors that run port to starboard. I am thrown off by what I have found after removing most of the deck though. The Stringers have glass layed over them in a wavy pattern with 5 "humps", the inner 3 of which are solid. Check out the attached pictures to take a look. The outer two don't seem to have stringers in them, but I can't grasp why they would have done it this way if not.

I am also wondering if anyone knows what the best way to get the cap off would be. I am assuming that it would be pretty tough to do the transom (and deck for that matter) without pulling the cap.

I plan to cut the stringers out tomorrow (hopefully I will get most of the way done). I will keep updating my progress. Thanks in advance for all of your input as this would be out of my realm without it.

P.S. I will eventually need some suggestions on what type of wood to use for stringers and deck and also what type of resin and where to buy but I plan to do some more research before that time comes.

Welcome Kj, no help here either on the number of stringers, but removing the cap usually starts with removing the rub rail & the trim holding it, then you should remove the windshield and any other 'heavy' items to make it as light as possible {and not risk breaking or bending it} then it's a simple matter of having some manual help or rigging up some sort of lifting device.

Take lots of photo's as you proceed, great for later reference or when needing a question answered, besides we luv seeing them and watching the progress! Have fun :D

Neat Starcraft! I'm doing a tinny so know a lot less about the glass models, I'm sure somebody will jump in and answer all your questions.

On another topic, do you think you could post a close-up photo of your bow light? I'm trying to figure out if mine is OEM on my '64 and in your photo, it looks similar.

Good luck & have fun!
